Originally from Concord, VA, I grew up in Portmouth, Va where my father managed a department store. In a house with seven children there was always a wide variety of music being played, sung, or listened to; jazz, country, blues, rock & roll, soul, folk, pop, classical, and spiritual. My first record was a Roger Miller album that I just about wore out listening to ´Dang Me´ and ´King of The Road´. Chuck Berry and Elvis made me want to play the guitar, and Merle Haggard and Muddy Waters made me want to sing. My first and best teachers were Andre Word and Terry Brabson. All my early learning and listening was further influenced by the daily voices and living that colors the experience of growing up in Virginia. In 1985 I moved west; Nashville, Denver, and now San Diego. The sky is different, the wind, the sounds, the attitudes. All influence the music. I feel its mellowed, but also become clearer, as if the vast openess of the American west forces me to focus on the small and the more obvious; the plain is also the rich.
